I am a liar. Not to you, my family, friends, etc. I lie to myself. I lie to myself all the time. What do I lie about you may ask? Well, I’ve been doing it for so long that I am having trouble distinguishing between the truth and the lies. I mostly lie to myself about how I truly feel or how something makes me feel. I tend to push those things aside or down.
Here’s the truth, you may lie to yourself but the truth surfaces. It may surface in how you react to something when you’ve had enough or your body may tell on you. So much of my own self-worth has been wrapped up in the emotions of others, mostly the ones I love dearly. I am learning that I can’t own their emotions, much less, control them. That only leads to disappointment.
I am not quite sure how to feel what I feel- identify, welcome it, and kick it out the door. So much has been just ushering the feelings out the door, I haven’t had time to feel and be okay with that feeling. I pour every ounce of energy into work, kids, and my husband that I can literally no longer pour from an empty cup. The only person that can truly take care of me is me and I am failing miserably.
Now with a 2nd battle in the midst of radiation, I am trying to be okay with simply not being okay, being a human. Rest when I need to rest. Don’t do something just to silence my mind. Live. Be in the moment. The world tells us to seize the moment, lose weight, get enough rest, stay at home, be a working mom, don’t drink Diet Coke (that’s crazy, lol!), eat this, don’t eat that, buy the shoes, thrift, buy the house, have a tiny home, stay mentally focused, sleep, be happy, be sad. I feel like we live in a twisted Dr. Suess world where down is up and up is down. Or is up sideways? When does the cat arrive to play with Thing 1 and Thing 2? No, he’s not politically correct; he’s been canceled. And don’t get me started with Thing 1 and Thing 2. They represent all the evil in this world!
Whew. Inundated. So, here’s the truth. I am not perfect and will never be. I have to be okay with that. I am doing the best I can and that’s okay. As my preacher reminded us yesterday, we can’t compare ourselves to others. Run your own race.
- I have to own my feelings-recognize and process- not push down.
- I can’t own the feelings of others. Stop over analyzing their breathing and thinking the worst. (The breathing refers to huffs and puffs).
- Rest
- Find something I enjoy and do it!
- Be okay with not being okay. This too shall pass.
- Take it literally a day at a time. Reward yourself for the little things. I got up at 5:45 AM today and eased into my day!
- Don’t take yourself too seriously.
- What the world tells you is probably not the best for you. You know what’s best for you.
- Dance
- Live.
I share this in hopes it helps someone like me that may be struggling and hiding behind sunglasses with tears down their face. It happens. It has happened to me recently. Don’t suffer in silence. Choose to love yourself and accept that you are trying. Say, it again, for the cheap seats- you are trying and that my friend is enough. You are enough.

Reminding myself with this photo that it’s okay to relax. It’s okay your toes aren’t done.
